MERAUKE – Scorching heat did not stop PT Papua Agro Lestari (PT PAL) employees from cleaning the Rawa Kasat river from garbage and debris. Scraps of rubbish were taken out little by little and dumped into designated trash bins, all with the help of Guiss people who live nearby.

This activity was done with the awareness that Rawa Kasat cannot be separated from the lives of village members. Most of the Guiss people work as fishermen, so day-to-day activities center on the body of water. Thus, it is important to keep the waterway clean so locals can continue to benefit from it.

Employees and locals were not at all bothered by exhaustion and sweat; they continued making efforts to conserve nature. Laughter and jokes filled the air as they worked together picking up trash along the river bank. A lot of litter was being removed, including used plastic. The area, located at the country border, now looked cleaner and neater.

The cleanup was held in Ulilin District, Merauke, Papua at the end of last July. Not only was it a part of the company’s nature conservation efforts, but the event also aimed to socialize and build awareness of the importance of maintaining river hygiene, as it is an ecosystem supporting the lives of mankind and other creatures.

“Rawa Kasat is the village’s main water source and fishing ground. We are grateful PT PAL decided to run this conservation and cleanup event. We hope we can do this more frequently,” said Louis Payes Maikuin, a Maikuin clan member.

The cleanup is also one of the company’s efforts to socialize and educate Papua’s inland communities; a form of PT PAL’s concern for the social environment of indigenous people. This activity run under the Corporate Social Contribution (CSC) program.
